Captain Dan's Island Tours

Captain Dan’s Island Tours will take you on a guided cruise, circumnavigating Chincoteague Island. We start the tour by the foot of the Chincoteague Channel Bridge, and work our way south, as Captain Dan tells you a bit about the Island’s history, and his experience as a commercial fisherman working out of Chincoteague for the past 6 years.

As we round the southern end of Chincoteague Island, Assateague Island comes into view. First we see the point of the beach as it reaches out to touch the inlet which leads out to the Atlantic Ocean, then the wooded and marshy areas come into view. At this point in the tour, we are traveling in the waterway that separates Chincoteague Island from Assateague Island. This is where we slow things down a bit as Captain Dan tells you about the history of Assateague Island, the wild ponies, the lighthouse, and answers any questions you may have. We sail slowly along the western shore of Assateague, keeping our eyes peeled for some of the natural wildlife, such as dolphins, sea turtles, egrets, blue herons, bald eagles, and of course the wild ponies.

The majority of your time will be spent on a slow cruise between the Islands, enjoying all the scenery. Since Assateague Island is a national wildlife park, it has remained relatively untouched by the hands of human development. Assateague Island provides miles of coastline with beautiful views that you just aren’t able to see from your car as you drive.

As we depart from Assateague Island and make our way around the northern tip of Chincoteague, the Chincoteague Bay comes into view. A lot of people are unaware of how wide the bay is, because again, they only see what they can see from their cars. Once people see all that water, they all seem to start asking how deep it is. There is a local expression that goes “We’ve got plenty of water, but it’s spread real thin.” For the majority of our trip we are sailing in about 3 foot of water. So if you would happen to fall out of the boat, don’t panic, just stand up.
